Program History

The Sandusky Central Catholic High School boys golf program has a long tradition of excellence, shaped by decades of outstanding coaching. Beginning in 1978, John P. Veith, Class of 1954 and Hall of Fame inductee in 2018, led the Panthers for over 30 years, including five years as head coach and 20 years as assistant, achieving a combined record of 572-157 and an 80% winning percentage. Under his leadership, SMCC captured 11 SBC Championships, 32 Invitational Tournament Championships, 10 Sectional Championships, one District Championship, and six top-ten finishes at the State Team Championships, including a third-place finish in 2008. Chuck Riesterer, Class of 1972 and Hall of Fame inductee in 2019, coached alongside Veith from 1992 to 2004, helping the Panthers achieve five Division III State Tournament appearances, three consecutive SBC Championships, seven Sectional Championships, and a 178-62 overall record with a 134-48 SBC mark. In recent years, Sean Finneran, Class of 2000, has continued the program’s tradition of excellence as head coach, highlighted by his son Blake qualifying for the State Meet in 2024. Finneran, a multi-sport SMCC athlete, Kent State graduate, and general manager at American Quality Stripping, lives in Sandusky with his wife, Jenae, and their four children.
